Cargo Questions Made Practical

Start here when a useful-looking storage idea raises a very practical question. For exact fit and limits, your vehicle and equipment instructions come first.

Does a roof box increase my vehicle’s payload?

No. It provides another place to carry suitable items, but the rack, box and contents still count toward applicable vehicle mass limits. The roof system also has its own limits. Understand the separate limits.

Can any roof box fit any crossbars?

No. Check the exact box’s approved bar profiles, clamp dimensions and bar spacing, as well as the rack’s compatibility with your specific vehicle. Follow the complete compatibility chain.

What belongs in the roof box rather than the boot?

Bulky, relatively light items that are not needed at every stop are often good candidates. Follow the box instructions for weight distribution and internal restraint. Keep frequently needed items accessible in the vehicle.

Will a fabric boot organiser secure my load?

Not necessarily. Dividers and anti-slip strips are organisation features, not proof of load-restraint performance. Use a suitable restraint arrangement for the load and vehicle. Choose storage by its actual job.

How do I choose between one big crate and several small ones?

Test the loaded lift and access. Smaller task-based modules are often easier to move, while a large crate may waste space or become too heavy. Every module still needs suitable restraint. Check the hatch opening as well as the floor dimensions.

Can I pack above the rear seatbacks?

Do not assume it is safe. Consult your vehicle guidance and assess whether an approved barrier and suitable restraints are required. Keep visibility and safety systems clear. A parcel shelf or ordinary cargo cover is not automatically a protective barrier.

How should I store wet boots and camping equipment?

Use a removable washable tray or suitable temporary container, separate from clean luggage. Remove wet items to dry promptly after the journey. Build a separate wet-kit module.

What if my dog shares the boot?

Plan a suitable dedicated animal transport and restraint arrangement, with ventilation and usable space. Keep luggage secured separately and follow applicable animal-transport rules. Do not treat a leftover gap between crates as a transport plan.

What should I check before entering a covered car park?

Know the vehicle’s actual overall height with its roof equipment and compare it with the posted clearance. If clearance is uncertain, do not enter. Also check garage doors, ferry arrangements and other restricted-height spaces before the trip.

What if I cannot find the roof-load limit?

Check the exact vehicle handbook or ask the vehicle manufacturer or an authorised representative. Do not infer a limit from a similar model or from the rack’s capacity. Wait for reliable information before fitting or loading the system.

Still an awkward fit? Use the local message tool to describe the vehicle, the items and the access problem. It helps you prepare a clear enquiry; it does not certify a loading arrangement.
